Working in these industries is not all about the degree that you hold but about your skills and how good your portfolio is. When a potential employer calls you for an interview in the above mentioned fields, they do look at the school that you go to but in the end they need on hands experience. At VanArts it all about helping you get the experience and needed industry knowledge that makes sure you are not left behind in the race for a good emp[lyment opportunity.

Post-Graduation Work Permit Program pilot project

The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program has been extended to include graduates of private post-secondary institutions with career training programs that received their Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation before the pilot project’s start date of January 31, 2011, and continue to maintain their EQA status.
The pilot project will remain in effect for two years, with the possibility of extension.
Any future extension will be based on analysis of the project and would require agreement between Citizenship and Immigration Canada and B.C.’s Ministry of Regional Economic and Skills Development.
If initial results are positive, the project may be expanded to additional schools after the first year.
It is estimated that under the pilot project, between 675 and 950 international graduates will apply for post-graduation work permits in the first year.
B.C.’s Education Quality Assurance is a voluntary quality assurance designation that identifies B.C. public and private post-secondary institutions that have met or exceeded provincial government recognized quality assurance standards and offer consumer protection.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT POST-GRAD PROGRAM EXPANDED

International students at some of British Columbia’s private educational institutions will have the opportunity to gain Canadian work experience after graduation, thanks to a new pilot project.
The announcement was made today by Alice Wong, Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism and Member of Parliament for Richmond, and B.C. Minister of Regional Economic and Skills Development Ida Chong. It marks the next step in the Government of Canada’s strategy to attract international students. Since 2005, the number of foreign students coming to Canada has increased by 25 per cent, with a total of 85,140 entries in 2009.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to attract international students to Canada and retaining them after they graduate,” said Parliamentary Secretary Wong. “With this pilot project, we are continuing to build Canada’s standing as a destination of choice for international students.”
“In the next decade, B.C. will have more than a million job openings, and immigration is going to be a key factor in our ability to fill them,” said Minister Chong. “By expanding this program to private institutions, we’re giving more international students an opportunity to work and potentially to choose British Columbia as their place to call home.”
The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program already allows students who have graduated from an eligible program at a post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Under the program, graduates can apply for open work permits for up to three years, depending on the length of time they studied. Until now, only international students at public universities and colleges and private degree-granting institutions were able to apply.
With the implementation of this two-year pilot project on January 31, graduates of private post-secondary institutions with career training programs that have received the British Columbia Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation are also able to apply for an open work permit.
“International graduates with Canadian education, Canadian work experience, and an ease and familiarity with Canadian society are often excellent candidates to apply for permanent resident status through the Canadian Experience Class,” stated Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney.
The Government of Canada is committed to giving Canadian educational institutions a competitive edge in attracting international students and recent initiatives, including online application services, the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program and the Off-Campus Work Permit Program, have been very successful in doing so.

Indian student from VanArts work on Puss In Boots!!!

Rohan Oka, a graduate from the Game Art & Design program at VanArts in 2009, has since been working for Dreamworks Animation, currently at their studio in Bangalore, India. Most recently, he had a career update working on the new animated feature now in theaters, Puss in Boots.
Rohan says, "My awesome team and I worked on a few sequences in the surfacing aspect of the film.  Here every little pixel of texture is scrutinized and tweaked over and over, which is the reason we get a good-looking polished output.  Personally, it was a great experience to work on something this grand, and even better being credited with my first feature film, Puss in Boots!"
Rohan also says, "The efforts put in by my instructors at VANARTS to mold us into complete artists paid off. In everything I do here now at Dreamworks Animation, I am always reminded and guided by the knowledge they gave us. Being a big fan of Shrek & Madagascar, working at Dreamworks is a treat... and I am enjoying every moment of it."

International Education Adds $1.8 Billion Yearly to BC Economy

VANCOUVER, BC – April 27, 2011
International education is now a leading export for British Columbia (BC), creating jobs and supporting families in communities and regions across the province. The total value of international education exports in 2010 reached over $1.8 billion dollars, ranking the sector fifth in the generation of export income. Among BC’s key trading partners China, India, and South Korea, international education ranks as a top-three contributor to BC’s economy. In order to accurately measure the full economic impact of international education province-wide, the BC Council for International Education (BCCIE) has engaged noted economist Dr. Roslyn Kunin of Roslyn Kunin and Associates, Inc. (RKA, Inc.). Dr. Kunin’s report The Economic Impact of International Education in British Columbia examines international student spending at K-12, post-secondary and language institutions across the province. Dr. Kunin’s study will help the province and BCCIE to benchmark international student data and to plan strategically for future growth in the industry. According to Dr. Kunin’s report, in 2010, BC welcomed an estimated 94 000 international students to the province, creating 21 540 jobs and an economic impact of $1.8 billion to the provincial economy. While many of the students are studying in the Lower Mainland and Southwest region of the province, international students also bring significant benefit to communities in Northern BC, the Southern Interior, and Vancouver Island. The top ten source countries for international students in 2010, in rank order, include Korea, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Mexico, Taiwan, United States, Germany, and Switzerland. “International students make significant contributions to northern communities as they bring with them a wide breadth of life experience and new approaches to local problems,” states Carolyn Russell, Director of Student Success at the University of Northern British Columbia. “Even though students may only be in northern BC for a short time, lifelong relationships are made that over time have and will contribute to the success of northern BC.”
“We have been successful in British Columbia in terms of attracting large numbers of quality students to participate in our education system, both in the public and private spheres,” says Randall Martin, Executive Director of BCCIE. “We are now the leading destination in Canada for new international students, many attracted by the deserved reputation of both quality of life and quality of education, supported at the post-secondary level by government-sanctioned Education Quality Assurance. Dr. Kunin’s report is an important early step in identifying gaps in our data collection and in benchmarking student sources, flows and destinations, supporting the creation of pathways and more targeted regional development of the sector. ”

Canadian Study Permit - A brief intro

Getting a Study Permit

More than 130,000 students travel to Canada every year to attend school. There are also many more students that come to Vancouver from around the world to improve their English language skills.

One World Agency can help you to get a Study Permit quickly and easily so you can start school in Canada right away. We can also assist you in finding the perfect school for you.

What is a Study Permit?

A study permit allows students from countries outside Canada to attend schools in Canada for a specified period of time.

Most international students will need a Study Permit to study in Canada.

There are some exceptions to this rule:

You do not need a Study Permit if you take a course or program in Canada with a duration of 6 months or less. You must complete the program or course inside the period authorized for your stay in Canada.
You do not need a Study Permit if you are a child classified as a "minor" and already resident in Canada as long as your parents are not classified as "visitors" in Canada.
If you are a family member or a member of the staff of a foreign representative in Canada who is accredited by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, you do not need a Study Permit to study.
Benefits of Having a Study Permit

You should apply for a Study Permit before you come to Canada if there is a possibility that you may wish to continue your studies in another program after you complete your short-term course or program. If you wish to continue your studies after the 6 month period expires you may have to leave Canada in order to apply for a Study Permit.

Requirement to Enroll in School

Before you can apply for a study permit, you must have been accepted at a school, university or college in Canada that is formally recognized by the Canadian Government.

One World Agency can assist you in finding a school and then get you the required Study Permit if you will be attending school for 6 months or more.

Medical Examinations

If you are planning to be in Canada for more than 6 months as a student you may require a medical examination. Students from Japan do not require a medical examination but students from India, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Mexico and other countries do require a medical examination.

Secondary School System in Canada

Canadian secondary schools provide an opportunity for students outside of Canada to enter Canadian schools where they can learn English while pursuing academic and career programs. Students from countries around the world receive invaluable learning experiences by studying in Canada. International students improve their English language skills, immerse themselves in Canadian culture and make lifelong friends during their stay.

Secondary schools (also known as "high school") are the second required step in the Canadian educational system. Students in Canada first complete Primary (also known as "elementary school") and then continue to secondary school at about age fourteen. Secondary school in Canada is normally completed by age eighteen. In order to continue on to a university or college, students in Canada must first complete their secondary school education.

Canadian secondary schools are among the best in the world. Many countries are adopting the curriculum of Canadian secondary schools. Parents from around the world send their children to Canadian secondary schools. The graduation certificate obtained from Canadian public schools is respected and accepted by post-secondary institutions such as universities and colleges in many countries.

Canadian Secondary Schools fall into two categories: public and private:

Public Secondary School (Public High School)

Canadian public secondary schools are completely funded by a provincial government (e.g. British Columbia). These schools offer a standardized lesson plan and are administered by a "board of education" or "district school board."

Admission to these schools by Canadian children is free. International students pay a fee to attend these schools but the fee is very low by international standard.

Private Secondary School (Private High School)

Canadian private secondary schools are funded through student tuition payments and sometimes partially funded by a provincial government. These schools are operated as a private organization. Private secondary schools may be for-profit or non-profit. All private secondary schools in Canada are registered with a provincial government and each school must follow government guidelines and standards.

Many private secondary schools in Canada accept international students. The fees for these schools vary from approximately the same as a public secondary school to many times higher. An education obtained from a Canadian private school is among the very highest in the world.

Legal Guardian

If a minor child (under the age of eighteen) enrolls in a Canadian public or private school they require a local legal guardian (also knows as custodian) who can look after the child's day-to-day needs and assist them in an emergency. One World Agency agent can act as a legal guardian for your child if you will not be accompanying your child to Canada. We make daily reports to you as to your child's welfare.

One World Agency

One World Agency can enroll your child in a public or private secondary school in Canada and provide accommodation and supervision of your child as well as any other services your child may require during their time in Canada.

An example of Educational Scams done by some agencies that students should be aware of -part 2

tricking students to join fake colleges/university

This usually happens in China, Taiwan and other south east asian countries, but some places in India too.
The agents go to rural areas, open their office and tries promoting fake colleges/ universities. They tend to target the less educated people promising them of higher education abroad. They show the students photos of famous universities and colleges and explain that it is another college/university under a fake name. They would convince people saying that it is a really good institute and their programs are really good. These agents would also provide them with a bank account (which is usually would be their account) and ask them to send the tuition fees to this account. They would trick a lot of students and their parents into doing this and eventually one day they would disappear.

We would keep you posted on other scams too, but these are some of the really big ones.

An example of Educational Scams done by some agencies that students should be aware of

Some of the major scams done by some Indian agencies that we have come across and students back in India should really be aware of are:

Purposeful rejection of student visa

The very first step needed for getting a student visa is to pay upfront some amount of tuition fees to the college/university and get the conditional acceptance letter. This is the norm in many of the colleges/universities. This letter is an important document that is required to be submitted by the agent along with the student visa application. The scam we talk about occurs in conjunction with this. Some unscrupulous agents would ask the student to pay the amount needed to get the conditional acceptance letter. The student wires in the money to the college/university account. Then these agents purposefully prepare student visa applications in such a way that they get rejected for sure.
The next step by the agent is to inform the college/university, saying that the visa has been rejected for the particular student and the student is requesting for money. The agents are also clever enough to include their bank details, so that the money sent back by the college/university is received in their account. In most cases, such fraudulent agencies also never give out too much details of the student to the college/university, and usually the college/university would be given the address and contact number of the agent and not that of the student. This leaves the college/university no option to contact the student but only the agent.
In the mean time the student really approaches the agent and asks about the fees paid and the agent just washes off the hands saying that they never got the money from the college/university. They do this to many students and eventually one day they just disappear closing down their office, leaving the student in a hopeless situation.

This article is an example of one such scam: http://m.timesofindia.com/city/chandigarh/Visas-of-50-students-rejected-permanently/articleshow/9630575.cms
